Datafy Tally Implementation Guidelines
Installing Tally
Placement is critical for accurate data collection and device longevity. We recommend an unobstructed line of sight to accurately take advantage of its 250-foot radius in full. Obstructions may decrease signal strength and the measurable radius.
How do I choose the best location to install my device?
Review Obstructions: Place the device where it has an unobstructed view of the area you want to measure.
A single typical wall (sheetrock, little to no insulation) will only have a modest impact on range, but multiple walls, extra thick walls, or concrete walls will severely limit the range of the device.
If the venue is larger than 250 feet, space multiple devices so their coverage zones slightly overlap. You will be able to see your zone coverage and placement on your device management page.
Look up! Overhead installations are highly recommended to prevent tampering. It also helps maximize measurement in dense crowds. Ground-level installations can be used if it is the only viable option.
Protect from the sun: The device contains sensitive electronics. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight for extended periods. Outdoor locations must provide at least partial shade during the afternoon sun.
Prioritize security: Choose a location where it is unlikely the device will be bumped by crowds or equipment, and follow all mounting and safety guidelines.
Once you have found the ideal location, it is time to secure the device. While the Tally device itself is water-resistant and built to withstand dust and outdoor elements, the power connections require special safety considerations.
Mounting & Safety Checklist
Mounting the device
Option 1: For permanent installations, use the included screws through the device's secure mounting holes—located at the top and bottom of the unit—to attach it firmly to a wall or structure.
Option 2: For temporary installations, use heavy-duty zip-ties, velcro, or similar secure methods at your discretion to mount the unit to temporary structures like scaffolding or tents.
Protect the power outlet: While the Tally device is weather-rated, the wall outlet and adapter are NOT. Keep the wall adapter and outlet as dry as possible. If exposed to rain, position the device to physically shield the power source, or use a weatherproof outlet cover.
Secure the power cable: Use zip-ties to fasten the power cable securely to the wall or structure. The device must be protected from individuals inadvertently tripping on or pulling the cable; if the cable is pulled out, data collection stops immediately.
Keep a safe distance: The device contains radio-emitting transmitters. For safety, the device must be placed or installed at least eight inches away from people.
